Performed in 1895 at the St James’s Theatre, in London, and published in 1899, the play has long been considered to be Wilde’s most famous work as a playwright.
Widely appreciated by readers of all ages, the witty masterpiece is centered on the themes of marriage, social expectations, class and the lifestyle in Victorian society. The play portrays the events in the lives of two men – Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff – who use deception to bend the truth to seek thrill in their lives.
Known as the first-of-its-kind modern comedy in England, the play is regarded for its witty dialogues and eccentric characters. Counted among the best of satirical comedies, The Importance of Being Earnest continues to delight readers with its comical yet snappy banter that brings out the absurdity of human behaviour.
Author's Description
Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
One of the greatest playwrights of the Victorian Era, Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, dramatist, and critic. Born into a well-known family, he grew up in Ireland and went on to attend the University of Oxford, England, from where he graduated in 1878. It was here that he devoted himself to the study of the emerging Aesthetic Movement, which emphasized aesthetic values in opposition to social and political themes in the works of literary and fine arts. Known for his acerbic wit and flamboyant style, Wilde wrote his first play, The Duchess of Padua, in 1891. In the following years, he wrote five more productions, but it was The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) that was considered his greatest achievement. His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), remains a classic. Wilde died of acute meningitis in 1900.
